5 Must-Have Items to Pack for Your Summer Travels: Dental Edition

By: Dr. Tina Garza, DDS

Whether you’re heading to the beach, the mountains, or your favorite vacation destination, don’t forget to pack a few essentials to keep your smile healthy while you’re away!

1. Disposable Pre-Pasted Toothbrushes

These single-use toothbrushes are perfect for backpacks, carry-ons, and road trips. Each one is individually wrapped, so it stays clean until you’re ready to use it. No water or toothpaste is needed—just open the package, brush, and toss it away when you’re done.

This is the brand I’ve used while traveling:

2. Sugar-Free Gum

You may already pack gum to help relieve ear pressure during flights, but did you know it can also benefit your oral health? Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva, which helps wash away food particles, neutralize acids, and reduce your risk of cavities. Just be sure it’s sugar-free!

3. Straws

If you’re enjoying coffee, tea, soda, or other dark-colored beverages, drinking through a straw can help reduce staining on your teeth. When possible, rinse or swish with water afterward to help wash away stain-causing pigments.

4. Your Retainer (and Retainer Case!)

Don’t leave your retainer at home! Teeth can begin to shift surprisingly quickly if you stop wearing it. Even a short break can make your retainer feel tight or uncomfortable, and after a longer period, it may not fit at all. Packing your retainer case also helps protect it from getting lost or accidentally thrown away.

5. Your Calendar

Before your trip, check your calendar and schedule your back-to-school dental checkup and cleaning. It’s a great way to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy after your travels, and you’ll leave with a fresh, professionally cleaned smile.

Have a wonderful trip! Before you head out, stop by our office to schedule your dental checkup and pick up a free pre-pasted toothbrush or a complimentary replacement retainer case. Safe travels, and bon voyage!
