Here are seven signs that it may be time to schedule a dental visit:

1. Your Gums Bleed When Brushed

Inflamed or bleeding gums should not be ignored. This can be a sign of gum or tooth infection. It can also indicate problems with the bone supporting your gums and teeth, known as periodontal disease.

2. You Have Persistent Bad Breath

A persistent, bad odor in your mouth can be related to infection, cavities, or other health conditions beyond the mouth, such as acid reflux.

If bad breath continues despite regular brushing and flossing, it’s worth having it checked.

3. Your Teeth Are Sensitive to Hot or Cold

Your teeth contain nerves that can become sensitive or painful when a cavity forms, enamel is lost from teeth grinding, or gum recession exposes sensitive areas.

When a cavity begins to hurt, it may mean that it has become larger and is getting closer to the nerve. Early treatment can help prevent the problem from getting worse.

4. You Notice a Dark Spot on a Tooth

A visible dark spot could be a cavity. Cavities occur when bacteria break down the tooth.

To treat a cavity, the damaged portion of the tooth needs to be removed. That’s why it’s best to address cavities as early as possible—the earlier they’re treated, the less tooth structure may need to be removed.

5. Your Teeth Hurt When Eating

Pain when eating can be related to cavities, teeth grinding, or cracked teeth.

Addressing the problem early may help prevent further damage, including a piece of the tooth breaking off.

6. Your Jaw Hurts or You Can’t Open Your Mouth Wide

Jaw pain can be related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which is located near your ear.

Grinding or clenching your teeth can contribute to jaw pain and, in some cases, jaw locking. Patients may also experience headaches associated with jaw pain or muscle tension.

If you’re experiencing recurring jaw pain or difficulty opening your mouth, it’s a good idea to have it evaluated.

7. It Has Been More Than a Year Since Your Last Visit

Our office recommends dental checkups and cleanings at least every six months.

Regular visits allow your dental team to identify areas where your hygiene may need improvement, as well as places where food may be getting trapped and increasing the risk of cavities. https://www.northmeadowdental.com/services/dental-exam

Don’t Ignore Changes in Your Mouth

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t wait for the problem to get worse. Early evaluation can often mean simpler treatment and help protect your teeth and gums.
